This blog is about our journey with Arthrogryposis(AMC). It is not just a walk in the park. Flying all over the country for medical treatments for our two kids. Therapies and surgeries. Not always fun but always necessary.

do these look like normal feet? sophies arent as bad. first photo sophie, then bens
Yes! They can still be fixed and likely without additional surgery. Serial casting (when done correctly and by someone who is familiar with amc) can acheive AMAZING results! Evan's feet were severely clubbed when he came home from Ukraine, but a soft tissue release and two rounds of serial casting later (about 9 casts total) his feet are straight and flat! Now, his toes still look a lot like Ben's (they overlap and one actually looks like it is upside down), but that is not uncommon for AMC.
After Evan's clubbed foot surgery his feet looked a lot like Ben's do now. Our doctor told us that was as good as it was going to get. Then we went to Philly. The first thing they did was put him in serial casts and I could not believe the difference it made!
There will always be regression with AMC because the contractures are extremely tight, so the key to maintaining the results acheived through surgery and casting is effective bracing while they are still growing. If the braces don't fit just right, it will leave room for regression (this is what happended to Evan when he went back into KAFO's after his last sugery and we had to go back and do another round of serial casting). So it is also REALLY important that your doctor work closely with your orthotist to acheive maximum (and lasting) results.
Those feet CAN be flat and straight so don't take no for an answer!!!
Both my daughters had feet like that. Come to NC and see Dr. Campion at UNC. He is AWESOME!!!!! I'm glad to find you again- I've been out of touch too long:)
I am mom to 12 kids!. I have opinions that may not be popular, but they are mine.
I also make and sell various handmade items. you can see them at loveysforyourlove.etsy.com
(now that the kids are home I dont have a lot of time for crafting) Loveys for your love has been pretty inactive for awhile while I have been busy raising children. As the children are getting older and more independent I am hoping to return to that also.
oh man! poor littles. And to think they had surgeries to FIX them!!
ReplyDeleteCan they still be fixed here?
